The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay quickly was captivated with that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way of expression. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was in her university. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage belonging to one of the juries. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was assigned she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist right after college.
